HAL & Seabourn Named Most Ethical Company by Ethisphere Institute

posted April 22, 2014

For the third consecutive year, Holland America Line, together with sister line Seabourn, was named among the World’s Most Ethical Companies by Ethisphere Institute, a leading business ethics think-tank. The company secured its spot on the list by implementing and maintaining business practices and initiatives that are instrumental to company success and benefit the community.

Named in the Leisure and Hospitality category, Holland America Line/Seabourn is one of 144 total honorees representing 41 industries from around the world.

Vice President, General Counsel and Chief Ethics Officer Kelly Clark and Emmely Kik, Manager, Ethics and Compliance, accepted the 2014 World’s Most Ethical Companies award at an event March 20 in New York City.

“It is an honor to be named to the World’s Most Ethical Companies for the third consecutive year,” said Stein Kruse, president and CEO of Holland America Line. “We take pride in promoting ethical business standards and practices both internally and in the community, and to be recognized on such a prestigious list validates our efforts.”

“The entire community of World’s Most Ethical Companies believe that customers, employees, investors and regulators place a high premium on trust and that ethics and good governance are key in earning it,” said Ethisphere’s Chief Executive Officer, Timothy Erblich. “These companies join an exclusive community committed to driving performance through leading business practices. We congratulate everyone for their extraordinary achievement.”

In selecting World’s Most Ethical Company winners, Ethisphere Institute reviews a candidate’s code of ethics, litigation and regulatory infraction history; evaluates the investment in innovation and sustainable business practices; looks at activities designed to improve corporate citizenship; and studies nominations from senior executives, industry peers, suppliers and customers.

This is the eighth year Ethisphere has published the World’s Most Ethical Company rankings. Ethisphere reviewed hundreds of companies and evaluated a record number of applications utilizing its proprietary methodology through in-depth research and multistep analysis, naming the companies that surpassed their industry peers to this year's World's Most Ethical Companies list. The 2014 list features companies in more than three dozen industries, including several headquartered outside of the United States.

His outstanding contribution to the world of design has been recognized with numerous honors and awards, including an Honorary Doctorate from the New York School of Interior Design and induction into the Interior Design Hall of Fame.

For Seabourn, Tihany will create a design vision for the entire vessel including multiple dining venues; the Spa at Seabourn; showrooms; casino and lounges; outdoor deck areas; and the innovative and popular Seabourn Square multi-purpose space.

Tihany is renowned for his restaurant projects for high-profile celebrity chefs, including Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, Jean Georges Vongerichten, Charlie Palmer, Heston Blumenthal, Paul Bocuse and Wolfgang Puck, as well as luxury hotel projects worldwide, such as South Africa's One & Only Cape Town resort, Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas, King David Hotel in Jerusalem, The Oberoi Hotel in New Delhi, The Beverly Hills Hotel, The Breakers in Palm Beach and Hotel Cipriani in Venice to name just a few.

Another value that Tihany shares with Seabourn is a dedication to personalization. The designer takes pride in drawing inspiration from his clients' backgrounds or preferences.

"What I strive to do is to find an aesthetic that expresses the personality of the brand," said Tihany. "Thus, my goal is to design a beautiful, and very uniquely Seabourn ship, one that will reflect Seabourn's aura of casual elegance and thoughtful attention to detail, that will make their guests feel welcome and invite them to experience Seabourn's special brand of ultra-luxury."
